UNHRC’s letter to Barrick said that “12 deaths which allegedly occurred throughout/ensuing from operations by safety forces assigned to the mine. Of those, six have been allegedly the results of Barrick operations.”
North Mara Gold Mine Restricted (NMGML) is the proprietor and operator of the North Mara gold mine and Barrick Gold doesn’t have direct operations in Tanzania, the corporate stated.
Barrick owns a majority stake in NMGML since 2019.
Barrick stated the UNHRC working teams and particular rapporteurs didn’t conduct website visits, nor have interaction with the Tanzanian authorities.
“The non-public safety supplier, SGA, is unarmed. There are not any deadly weapons or ammunitions held by NMGML, its staff or contractors,” the corporate stated in its letter.
In 2022, Barrick had confronted a number of lawsuits alleging violence by safety forces at North Mara.
UNHRC didn’t instantly reply to a Reuters request for a remark.
